Purdue and Indiana meet for 103rd time

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 16 Purdue volleyball team (14-5, 6-4 Big Ten) continues conference play with a rivalry match against Indiana (12-11, 1-9 Big Ten) Wednesday night. The Boilermakers and the Hoosiers are scheduled for a 6 p.m. ET first serve at Holloway Gymnasium. The contest marks the 103 meeting between the two programs.

SERIES INFORMATION
Purdue owns a 69-34 all-time record against Indiana since winning the first two meetings in a series that which began on Oct. 4, 1975. Indiana claimed eight of the next nine matches until Purdue launched a 24-match win streak on Sept. 20, 1978, which lasted through the end of the 1985 season. The teams split the next 14 matches. The Hoosiers took 16 of the next 21 contests from 1992 to 2002. The Boilermakers have won 11 straight since 2008, including season sweeps in 2008 and 2010-2018.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE HOOSIERS
Earlier this month, the then-No. 20 Purdue volleyball team fought off a resilient Indiana squad, 3-2, at Wilkinson Hall. With the victory, the Boilermakers secure their 12th consecutive Monon Spike and 34th overall.

Sophomore Grace Cleveland guided Purdue's victorious efforts with a match-high 23 kills. Freshman Emma Ellis followed with a career-best 13 kills, while redshirt senior Blake Mohler added 12. Redshirt sophomore Hayley Bush paced the offense with a match-high 56 assists. Defensively, junior Jena Otec led the Boilermakers with 24 digs.

SCOUTING INDIANA
• The Indiana volleyball team is directed by second-year head coach Steve Aird. In his first season with the Hoosiers, Aird took a team that had finished 1-19 in the Big Ten in 2017 to 7-13 in the conference, with a season sweep of Ohio State and win against No. 14 Michigan.
• The 2019 Indiana squad returns nine players, has nine new players and seven seniors.
• The Hoosiers rank sixth in the Big Ten in blocking at 2.46 blocks per set. Indiana has recorded double-digit blocks in 10 matches this season, including 17 blocks in their win over Kentucky. Indiana tallied a season-high 18.5 blocks in their match against Purdue. The Hoosiers ranked 13th in the NCAA in total blocks with 223.5 on the season.
• Seniors Deyshia Lofton and Jacqui Armer have put up big numbers for the Hoosiers this season. The duo has combined for 323 kills on the season and rank one and two on the team in hitting percentage.
• Freshman Emily Fitzner recorded back-to-back double-doubles over the weekend. Fitzner recorded 13 digs and 16 assists against Nebraska and bettered those numbers the next day with 14 digs and 21 assists in the match against Iowa.
• Freshman Hayley Armstrong leads the Hoosiers in digs with 271. Armstrong has had five matches this season with 20 or more digs and ranks eighth in the Big Ten in digs per set at 3.73. Armstrong has reached double-digit digs in 11 of her 13 matches this season.
