The Golden Boot returns to West Lafayette for the fifth straight year

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the fifth straight year, the Purdue women's soccer team secured the Golden Boot with its 2-1 victory at Indiana. The come-from-behind win in the regular-season finale was secured with goals by sophomore Grace Walsh (21st minute) and junior Hannah Melchiorre (54th minute).

The Boilermakers fought back from an early Hoosier goal, which was scored in the seventh minute of play. In the 21st minute, Walsh evened the match at 1-1 off a free kick. Not only was it the first goal of the defender's collegiate career, but it was the fastest Boilermaker goal scored against the Hoosiers since Oct. 28, 2015 when Erika Arkans scored in the seventh minute of play.

Melchiorre followed with the game-winner in the second half. Griffith sent a pass up the field to the forward, where Melchiorre took on the IU keeper one-on-one and scored with a ball to the lower-near post. With the goal, Melchiorre closes the regular-season with a team-leading four goals.

Marisa Bova earned the win, closing the 2019 season with goals against average mark of 0.86 to tie for fifth in program history. It is the best single-season record in 11 years.

The result was Purdue's first multi-goal effort since the 2-1 victory at Iowa State on September 1st. Additionally, the result keeps Purdue in the postseason hunt with 11 points in the Big Ten standings. Two rescheduled games: Indiana at Michigan State and Ohio State at Wisconsin will take place Wednesday afternoon, with its outcomes effecting the Boilermakers' entry.
