GAMEDAY INFORMATION – FALL EXHIBITION GAME
Heartland College at Purdue
Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. ET / Planned 12-Inning Game
Alexander Field / West Lafayette, Indiana
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball has fall ball events at Alexander Field each of the first three weekends of October, beginning Saturday with a visit from Heartland College for a 12-inning exhibition game.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET and admission is free at Alexander. Purdue and Heartland both sport large fall rosters so the coaches have once again agreed to play 12 innings regardless of the score. That helps maximize the at-bats and innings for as many student-athletes as possible.
The Boilermakers host Wabash Valley College (Mount Carmel, Illinois) Friday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. to kick off Homecoming Weekend on campus. The fall ball season concludes with the three-game Black & Gold Series, which is set for Oct. 17-19. All three games will be played regardless and all are expected to be six-inning affairs.
Based in Normal, Illinois, Heartland College visits Alexander Field in October for the second year in a row. Alumnus Patrick J. Smith (2018-19), who was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in June, and first-year Boilermaker Miles Simington both started their college careers at Heartland. Simington was 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in last year's Purdue-Heartland game.
Andrew Bohm and Trevor Cheaney both struck out five over two innings of hitless relief vs. Heartland a year ago. They led the way as the Boilermakers racked up 20 strikeouts over 12 innings.
Saturday's game will be Heartland's fourth of the week and 12th of the fall. The Hawks were scheduled to play a doubleheader against St. Charles Community College and Triton College in Metro St. Louis on Friday. Led by Iowa alumnus Jimmy Frankos, who played at Alexander with the Hawkeyes three straight years from 2013 to 2015, Heartland compiled a 32-20 record in the spring. The Hawks earned the No. 3 seed in the NJCAA Region 24 Tournament.
First-year Purdue pitcher Ricky Castro earned a win against Heartland on April 19 with five innings of two-run ball as Parkland College swept a doubleheader in Normal. Simington was the only HCC player to record an RBI in that game. He also walked twice vs. Castro.
Newcomer Kyle LaPlante homered and Siminigton had three RBI in last month's exhibition win vs. the Ontario Nationals U18 travel team. The games vs. Heartland and Wabash Valley represent the two official exhibitions NCAA Division I teams are permitted to play in the fall.
