SUNSET, S.C. - Purdue women's golf's Danielle du Toit matched a Boilermaker freshman record Sunday with her fourth round in the 60's this season, shooting four-under 68 to open the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee. The rookie's score is tied for second place individually, while the team sits tied for fifth at two-under 286 after 18 holes.
The Boilermakers logged their ninth team round of the season under par this season and are eight shots off the team lead, shared by No. 7 Vanderbilt and No. 14 Auburn at 10-under par. They made a combined 15 birdies, led by four each from du Toit and senior Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri.
du Toit made two birdies on each side, taking advantage of No. 7 and No. 8 on the front side and going back-to-back on No. 14 and No. 15 on the back nine. Her fourth round in the 60's this season matches sophomore teammate Inez Wanamarta for Purdue's freshman record, in addition du Toit's 12th round of the season under par, which also ties another rookie record shared by Wanamarta and Maude-Aimee Leblanc.
Putri shot even par on the day, making all four of her birdies over seven holes in the middle of the course. She came in under par on No. 6 and then had three in a row on 9, 10 and 11, but had a pair of bogeys early and late to even her score.
Wanamarta, junior Micaela Farah and freshman RuQing Guan all shot one-over 73 to account for the final two team scores. Wanamarta made 13 straight pars to open the round, getting her lone birdie on No. 16, while Farah and Guan boasted strong finishes as they both made birdie on two of their final three holes.
Auburn's Julie McCarthy holds the individual lead after an opening-round, six-under 66, holding a two shot lead on du Toit and four others tied for second place.
The Boilermakers will play the second round tomorrow alongside Virginia Tech and the tournament-host Tigers, expecting to tee off at approximately 9:30 a.m. ET.
