WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball's first of two midweek rematches is against an Indiana State team that continues to sport the best winning percentage in the Midwest.
First pitch against the 21-4 Sycamores is set for 6 p.m. ET at Alexander Field. General admission tickets, hot dogs, nachos and domestic draft beers are all specially priced at just $2 for all of the Boilermakers' midweek games.
Purdue has won six of its last seven and compiled some impressive numbers on the mound since March 10. The Boilermakers have compiled a 2.36 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over their last 14 games. Their 9.37 strikeouts per nine innings during that stretch is also an impressive clip, but pretty much in line with their season average of 9.25, which leads the Big Ten.
Of the teams that have made multiple visits to Alexander Field since the ballpark opened in 2013, Indiana State, Louisville, Minnesota and Nebraska are the only ones that remain undefeated at Purdue's home field. The Sycamores are 5-0 at Alexander and were the last visiting team to taste victory in West Lafayette a year ago. After falling to ISU 2-1 on April 18, the Boilermakers started a pair of 13-game win streaks – overall and home.
Indiana State is 5-1 against Big Ten teams this year, highlighted by a 3-1 home win vs. an Illinois team that was nationally ranked until going 0-4 last week. The Sycamores also swept Rutgers in a neutral-site series in Fort Myers, Florida (March 22-24). Wednesday's game marks the beginning of a six-game Big Ten road stretch for ISU, which includes visits to East Lansing and Ann Arbor for the front half of its spring break trip.
Indiana State suffered two of its four losses this past weekend at Missouri State, losing the first two games of the series in 11 and 12 innings, respectively. The Sycamores raced out to 10-0 lead after the third inning of the series finale to avoid the sweep in Springfield.
The Boilermakers had an opportunity to take an eighth-inning lead in their March 13 loss in Terre Haute. Having already rallied from a 3-0 deficit, Purdue had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth while trailing 4-3. But Tyler Grauer got Zac Fascia to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam. Entering the day, Fascia was 7-for-15 with runners in scoring position and had driven home a runner from third base with less than two outs in all five of his opportunities.
PURDUE NOTABLES
• The Boilermakers surrendered only one run over 19 innings against Penn State this past weekend. Purdue's 22 consecutive scoreless innings from the second inning of the March 26 win vs. Valparaiso through the fifth inning of the March 31 victory vs. Penn State represented the team's longest streak since posting 24 straight zeros in May 2016.
• The Boilermakers posted 29 consecutive scoreless innings against Penn State from 2018 to 2019 – 15 straight to finish off a three-game sweep in Central Pennsylvania last season and 14 in a row to begin this year's series.
• Purdue is averaging 9.25 strikeouts per nine innings, the top mark in the Big Ten. Led by Trent Johnson (18 in 7 2/3 innings), they've racked up 56 Ks over 45 innings in the first five conference games (11.2 Ks per 9).
• Johnson has recorded 23 outs in his first three Big Ten appearances, with 18 of those coming via the strikeout. He shares the league lead in strikeouts in conference play. Of the three other pitchers (all starters) with 18 Ks over the first two league weekends – Minnesota's Max Meyer (14 innings, 11.6 K/9), Indiana's Pauly Milto (14 2/3 innings, 11.0 K/9) and Penn State's Dante Biasi (12 innings, 13.5 K/9) – Johnson's ratio of 21.2 Ks per nine innings is the highest by a wide margin.
• While being the final pitcher used in each of the last six victories, Bo Hofstra recorded a win and three saves over Purdue's first two Big Ten series. Since 2005, Josh Lindblom is the only other pitcher to have a similar impact over the first two weekends of conference play. In 2008, Lindblom registered four saves as Purdue won three of four vs. both Northwestern (home) and Iowa (road) on its way to a 21-win conference record. That was the final season in which the Big Ten utilized a 32-game conference slate with Saturday doubleheaders every weekend.
• Already twice this season, Purdue has won a weekend series via a pair of one-run victories. The series wins vs. NJIT and Penn State both included a walk-off win as well. Prior to this year the Boilermakers had not won a pair of one-run games vs. the same team in the same weekend since March 2011. Since the Big Ten moved to three-game weekend series in 2009, the Boilermakers have won a pair of one-run games in the same weekend only six times. The 2012 Big Ten championship team was the last to do it twice.
• Purdue is 21-9 in one-run games in three seasons under head coach Mark Wasikowski.

SERIES VICTORIES BY WINNING THE CLOSE ONES?? @trentjohnson__8 has recorded 23 outs over his first 3 relief appearances in Big Ten play. 18 of those outs have been Ks. He shares the B1G lead in league play & is averaging a ridiculous 21.1 Ks per 9.
