CARBONDALE, Ill. – Four Boilermakers claimed top-4 finishes at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic, hosted by Southern Illinois, highlighted by a pair of victories on the women's team by Gabrielle Broschard and Brittney Campbell.
Veteran Broschard entered the day as the 3,000-meter steeplechase favorite and delivered on the expectations. Clocking in at 10:59.76, the senior produced the victory three seconds ahead of the runner-up. Broschard was neck-and-neck with Southern Illinois's Kayla Schiera through the first split, but Broschard pulled ahead to maintain the lead. Fellow Boilermaker Taylor Mortensen finished in third-place behind Broschard with a time of 11:36.05.
Campbell's victory came in the 800-meter run following the fastest final split time of the race. Campbell held second through the first split (1:03.28), but was able to pass Big Ten foe Mikaela Lucki of Illinois during the final stretch (1:06.70) for the win and a final time of 2:09.98.
Additionally, Isabelle Sparreo notched her first top 5 finish of her outdoor collegiate career. With a time of 4:40.19 in the 1,500-meter, Sparreo recorded third-place. Leah Neustedter placed just behind Sparreo in ninth-place with at time of 4:46.06, followed by Mary Abramson in 12th-place (4:54.44).
On the men's side, freshman Tyler Bowling earned 19th-place in the after crossing the finish line in 4:03.78. William Young placed 24th in the 800-meter finals (20:00.90).
