WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Trent Pellini's program-record time in the 100 breaststroke not only earned the sophomore a berth at the NCAA Championships, it also helped four of his Purdue teammates qualify as well.
Pellini became the first Boilermaker to ever break 52 seconds in the 100 breast, ranking eighth nationally this season with a time of 51.76. He has qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time.
Pellini also helped Purdue eclipse program records in both the 200 and 400 medley relays at the Big Ten Championships. The 200 medley relay team's time of 1:24.53 was an NCAA automatic qualifying time that ranks 20th nationally. With Pellini qualifying individually for NCAAs, the Boilermakers are also permitted to send four additional swimmers to NCAAs to compete in relays.
Nikola Acin, James Boone, Erik Juliusson and Joe Young are the four additional student-athletes that will represent Purdue in the pool at the NCAA Championships later this month in Austin. All four earned their first career berths at NCAAs. The Boilermakers qualified a relay for NCAAs for the first time since 2015 and will have opportunity to race in three relays this time.
Divers earn their NCAA berths based on their performances at the Zone Championships. Purdue hosts the Zone C meet this week, with action set for Thursday through Saturday. The national championship meet invitations for the women's swimmers were announced last week. Taite Kitchel and Jinq En Phee qualified for the Boilermakers.
The Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin is serving as the host pool of both the Men's and Women's NCAA Championships this year. It marks the fourth time in the last seven years that the same aquatic center is hosting both championship meets. Indianapolis (2013, 2017) and Atlanta (2016) also served as the dual-host cities in the same season.
To qualify for an individual event, a swimmer's time had to rank among the top 28 to 30 nationally, depending on the event. Because he also has NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cuts) in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM, Pellini is also eligible to race in those events at the NCAA Championships.
Purdue has B Cuts in the 400 medley and 400 free relays as well. Those events are set for Thursday and Saturday at the NCAA Championships, the same days as the 200 IM and 200 breast. Pellini may choose to concentrate on the relays those days instead of the individual events. He'll swim the 100 breast and 200 medley relay Friday regardless.
The Boilermakers' likely relay quartets at NCAAs are…
200 Medley: Young, Pellini, Juliusson, Acin
400 Medley: Young, Pellini, Juliusson, Acin
400 Free: Acin, Pellini, Juliusson, Boone
The NCAA Championships are set for March 27 to 30.
