WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In the final stretch before the Big Ten Indoor Championships, the Purdue track & field program will split for the upcoming weekend. The field and sprint student-athletes will travel to Clemson for the Tiger Paw meet, while the distance group heads to the Iowa State Classic in Ames.
The Tiger Paw Invite will showcase many of the nation's top programs. Among the team's set to compete are three Big Ten foes – Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers (men only). Additionally, the men's team will face six ranked opponents at Clemson: No. 2 Florida State, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Houston, No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 11 Southern California and No. 20 Penn State.
On the women's side, 10 top 25 opponents will be in attendance: No. 2 Southern California, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Florida, No. 5 Florida State and No. 10 Kentucky. No. 16 Tennessee, No. 18 South Carolina, No. 19 Penn State, No. 21 Ohio State and No. 24 Georgia Tech.
Tiger Paw action will begin Friday at Noon ET with the 60-meter hurdles prelims, while the field events will be underway Friday at 1:30 p.m. ET. On Saturday, field events will begin the day at 9:30 a.m. ET, followed by track events at 11:30 a.m. ET.
Purdue will compete in the Iowa State Classic mile and 5,000-meter run. The 5k is slated to start Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET, while the mile will start at 1:25 p.m. ET on Saturday.
At Purdue's last meet with national contenders, the Boilermakers produced two first-place and 12 top five finishes. Additionally, distance runners Jaret Carpenter and Brody Smith shattered the Purdue men's 3,000-meter run record, replacing it with Carpenter's 8:00.67 time – a whole six seconds faster than the previous program best. This weekend, the duo will be racing in the 5k at Iowa State.
The men's team currently ranks No. 7 in the nation in the men's 60-meter dash. Combined, the foursome of Samson Colebrooke, Waseem Williams, Malcolm Dotson and Justin Becker own a time of 27.04 seconds.
In the women's events, the long jump moved up seven spots for the team's largest gain in the week's event squad national rankings. Lead by Jaden Mattox's 6.10-meter performance at the Fred Wilt Open, the Boilermakers now stand among the top 35 nationally. Also gaining season-bests at the meet were fellow long jumpers Asia Young and Kyara Muhammad.
The Purdue men's team ranks No. 3 in the Great Lakes Region, while the women stand at No. 8.
