WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue football student-athletes accomplished great things in the classroom this fall.
To wit:
* Their 2.88 semester grade-point average is the highest ever.
* Their 2.89 cumulative GPA is tied for the highest ever.
* Over half of the team (59 of 116) achieved a 3.0 or better GPA.
* Twenty Boilermakers had a 3.5 or better GPA, the most ever.
Here are the top six football student-athletes ranked by fall semester GPA:
Jake Herr - 4.00
Jack Plummer - 4.00
Ben Makowski - 3.98
Eric Miller - 3.94
Bearooz Yacoobi - 3.93
Rondale Moore - 3.81
Additionally, eight current Boilermakers earned their bachelor's degree this month: Markus Bailey (movement and sport sciences), Antonio Blackmon (movement and sport sciences), Jarrett Burgess (selling and sales management), D.J. Knox (selling and sales management and retail management), Michael Mendez (educational studies), Eric Swingler (financial counseling and planning), Jacob Thieneman (mechanical engineering) and Chazmyn Turner (selling and sales management). They joined seven other graduates on the team: Kirk Barron (organizational leadership), David Blough (organizational leadership), Kamal Hardy (selling and sales management), Cole Herdman (selling and sales management), Ryan Sadkowski (financial counseling and planning) and graduate transfers Dennis Edwards and Shane Evans.
Evans earned his master's degree in leadership this month.
Senior punter Joe Schopper achieved second-team Academic All-American honors, while Blough and Thieneman joined him with Academic All-District V laurels. A school-record 29 football student-athletes were recognized as Academic All-Big Ten.
