West Lafayette, Ind. - Purdue track & field head coach Norbert Elliott is set to begin the 2018-19 indoor season with the Hoosier Open. The Boilermakers open the season for the fourth consecutive year in Bloomington with throws starting off at 3:45 p.m. ET. Track events will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by vertical jumps at 5 p.m. and horizontal jumps at 5:15 p.m. ET.
Purdue will send 25 women and 21 men to contend at IU's Gladstein Fieldhouse, which includes 16 total freshmen (men: 10, women: six). The meet will include competitors from Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky and Saint Louis.
Two returning All-American throwers: Ashmon Lucas and Sarah Loesch are primed to compete Friday. Loesch makes her return in the weight throw. The redshirt senior earned first-team status after placing seventh at the NCAA Championships with a personal-best and throw of 21.50/70-6.50, which also inked as No. 3 in program history. Lucas will also compete in the weight throw after placing sixth at the 2017 NCAA Championships with a throw of 56.68m/186-7. In his first season with Purdue, Lucas broke the program record with NCAA's best season mark in the discus with a toss of 62.91m/206-5.
Fellow Purdue All-American Waseem Williams returns for his junior year after earning All-America status in the 100-meter dash in 2017. The Kingston, Jamaica native was also named Big Ten champion in the 100-meter dash with a school-record time of 10.10 seconds and Big Ten champion in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.63 seconds.
