WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.
– A doubleheader split Saturday at Alexander Field was enough to give the Boilermakers a victory in Purdue baseball's three-game Old Gold & Black Series to conclude the fall ball season.

The Boilermakers took the series two games to one, clinching it with a 2-1 victory in the opener of the doubleheader. Saturday's action featured a pair of five-inning games after a rain out Friday.

The Dream Chasers finished strong with a pair of runs in the final inning of the nightcap to salvage the series finale with a 3-1 victory.

Extra-base hits led to the game-deciding runs in both games. Skyler Hunter tripled to right center to open the third inning of game 1. He scored on sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Owen Jansen, breaking the 1-1 stalemate.

Nick Evarts' RBI double in the bottom of the fifth of game 2 would have been a walk-off winner under normal circumstances since it was a planned five-inning game. Johnny Sage scored the game-winning tally on the two-bagger to left field, but the teams opted to finish the frame. Seth Gergely also doubled in a run later in the inning.

SKINS TOTALS (1 PER INNING, 2 PER GAME)
• Boilermakers: 7
• Dream Chasers: 4

SATURDAY NOTABLES
Ryan Beard worked four innings of one-run ball as the starter for the Boilermakers in game 1. He struck the 3-4-5 portion of the Dreamer Chasers' lineup in order in his final frame and finished with six Ks.
Matt Moore struck out the side in order in the fifth inning of game 2.
Patrick J. Smith retired six of the seven batters he faced over two innings of hitless relief in game 1, striking out three.
• Boilermakers team captain Zac Fascia (3-for-5, walk, RBI) as well as Seth Gergely (3-for-8, 2B, RBI) and Cole McKenzie (3-for-6, 2B, walk, 2 HBP) each hit safely in all three games of the series.

Purdue's 2019 regular-season schedule was announced in September. Feb. 15 to 17 is the national season-opening weekend of the season. The Boilermakers visit Southern Miss for their opening weekend, the first of three straight series against 2018 NCAA Regional qualifiers. Official preseason practice begins Friday, Jan. 25.
