Thursday Results

TAMPA, Fla. -
Senior Savannah Carson and junior Janae' Moffitt earned trips to the NCAA Championships after finishing in the top 12 in their respective events Thursday on the first day of the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. The Boilermakers also advanced five individuals to Friday quarterfinal races. All Friday running events, excluding the steeplechases, have been moved up 30 minutes from Wednesday's revised schedule due to forecasted storms.

Moffitt had a dramatic qualification in the high jump. The two-time NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifier and Big Ten champion in the event needed three attempts at her third bar - 1.80 meters (5-10.75). She was the final jumper at the height and her last attempt was simple: clear the bar and advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Miss it and stay home. Moffitt left no doubt with her clearance as she was a couple inches over the bar and earned her third straight trip to the national championships.

Carson had to wait out a lengthy weather delay to compete in the long jump. The event, which started at 6:30 p.m. ET, was halted midway through the first two flights because of storms in the Tampa Bay area. Carson didn't attempt her first jump until nearly 10:45. She had a pair of jumps that were good enough for qualifying, including a best mark of 6.23 meters (20-5.25) on her third and final attempt. Her mark was the seventh best in the competition and earned her second consecutive berth in the long jump national championships.

Senior Brionna Thomas also won her heat to advance. She finished with a time of 52.01 seconds, which was fifth overall. Senior Jahneya Mitchell was runner-up in her heat with the 12th fastest overall time after she crossed the line in 52.52 seconds. The three will race for a spot in the national championships Friday at 1:15 p.m.

Senior Symone Black advanced to the 400-meter hurdles quarterfinals as she cruised to a win in her heat. She finished with a time of 56.23 seconds, which was the second-fastest time on the day. She'll compete for a spot in the national championships at 2:45 p.m. Friday.
