WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Less than a week removed from a weekend in New York, Purdue wrestling returns to the East Coast for the Navy Classic on Saturday. Action from the Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis, Maryland, is set to get underway at 10 a.m. ET.
The Navy Classic is the first of three team tournaments on the Boilermakers' regular season schedule. Ranked 22nd, they enter the 40th annual Navy Classic as the only ranked team among the tournament field. Participating teams include American, Brown, Bucknell, Campbell, The Citadel, Columbia, Delaware Valley (NCAA Division III), George Mason, Hofstra, Indiana, Kent State, Navy, Ohio, Old Dominion, Oregon State and Princeton.
Purdue (3-0, 0-0 B1G) made its first appearance of the season on the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll at No. 22 on Tuesday. The Boilermakers replaced then-No. 22 North Carolina on the poll after throttling the Tar Heels 31-6 at the Journeymen/MyHouse Northeast Duals on Nov. 11. It is the program's highest ranking since Jan. 19, 2016, when Purdue was ranked 20th.
The climb in the rankings wasn't limited to the team. Luke Welch improved one spot to No. 15, while Christian Brunner jumped five spots to No. 13 in Tuesday's InterMat rankings. Welch carries a 5-0 record at 125 pounds. At the Journeymen/MyHouse Northeast Duals the redshirt senior received a forfeit from UNC and put up his first technical fall of the season, beating Hofstra's Jacob Martin 16-1 (7:00). At 197 pounds, Brunner registered three wins in his season debut, highlighted by a 4-1 upset of North Carolina's 10th-ranked Danny Chaid.
