INDEPENDENCE, Minn. - The Purdue men's golf team opened its 2017-18 season Sunday at the Gopher Invitational. The 16 teams in the field were slated to play 36 holes, but darkness suspended round two with Purdue sitting in T-6th after 18 holes.
The teams were late in round two when it was called to darkness, making only round one results official.
The Boilermakers shot an 8-over par 292 to finish tied for sixth after 18 holes, just nine shots behind first-round leader Baylor. Purdue was just two shots out of fourth place (Michigan State; 290).
Leading Purdue was senior Brian Carlson at 2-under par 69, good for third after 18 holes. Carlson started the day par-birdie-eagle to set the tone and record his 11th career round in the 60s. His eagle came on the 443-yard, par-4 eighth hole when he holed out from the fairway.
Playing in their first career rounds, freshmen Jason Hong and Cole Bradley performed well, finishing T-16th and T-34th after 18 holes. Hong recorded a 1-over par 72, while Bradley shot a 3-over par 74. Hong was 3-over par through 11 holes, but he birdied his 12th, 13th and 15th holes before a late bogey dropped him over par. Bradley, meanwhile, was 4-over through seven holes, but played his last 11 holes in 1-under par to finish round one in 34th place.
Timmy Hildebrand was tied for 60th at 6-over par 77 and Jarle Volden was tied for 74th at 8-over par 79.
Round two will resume at 9:30 a.m. ET, on Monday and third-round play will continue following the conclusion of round two.
