Live Scores / USA Diving Trials Preview / FINA World Championships
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Seven Purdue divers are scheduled to compete this weekend in Indianapolis at USA Diving's World Championships Individual Trials.
Action at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI begins Friday at 10 a.m. ET and continues through Sunday afternoon. The top two finishers in the four events being contested this weekend earn World Championships berths. Scores are cumulative over the three rounds of competition at the Trials. The top 18 divers advance to the semifinals and the top 12 move on to the finals.
The Boilermakers will be represented by Joe Cifelli, Steele Johnson, Brandon Loschiavo, Morgan Meixner, Samm Reese, Max Showalter and Lexi Vincent. All seven Purdue divers are focusing on one event this weekend. Cifelli, Johnson Meixner and Reese are competing on 3-meter. Loschiavo, Showalter and Vincent are ready to compete from 10-meter.
Johnson and Loschiavo already clinched Team USA's World Championships bid in synchronized 10-meter with their victory in the event last month at the USA Diving Synchronized National Championships in Atlanta. It was their first competition as a synchronized team.
Individually, Johnson earned a 1-meter bid at Worlds by finishing as the runner-up in the event at the USA Diving Winter Nationals in December. This will be Johnson's second appearance at the World Championships and the first for Loschiavo.
The 2017 FINA World Championships are set for July 14 to 30 in Budapest, Hungary. Alumni Steven LoBue and David Colturi are also among the top candidates to represent the USA in the high diving events at Worlds.
Johnson won two NCAA titles at the IU Natatorium in March, sweeping the springboard events. He was an Olympian on 10-meter a year ago, but has opted to focus on 3-meter individually this summer.
All seven divers representing Purdue on the national stage this weekend also competed at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis in March. Cifelli, Loschiavo and Vincent joined Johnson as All-Americans. Reese and Showalter were honorable mention All-Americans.
The Boilermakers' other All-American this year, Emily Meaney, is scheduled to compete on 10-meter at the Australian Open Championships and World Championship Selection Trials next week in Sydney. Action is set for May 23 to 26 at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
