EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern (19-23, 5-8 B1G) continued to swing a hot bat to defeat Purdue (17-31, 6-10 B1G) 6-0 on Saturday at Drysdale Field. The shutout marked one of the best starts of Kaley Winegarner's career as she registered eight strikeouts to hold off the Boilermakers.
Katie Johnson began the game with three-straight innings without allowing an earned run, keeping Purdue within one after Northwestern capitalized on an error in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Purdue then threatened Northwestern's lead in the third inning with three-consecutive hits as Johnson, Sam Peltz and Maya Hughes all singled with one down to load the bases. However, Winegarner managed to work out of the bases-loaded jam with her one-run lead intact.
Following the third, Northwestern brought Purdue's offense to a halt and used five runs in the ensuing three innings to seal its 6-0 victory.
The finale between the Wildcats and the Boilermakers is set for Sunday, April 23 at 1 p.m. ET.
