WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - On Friday, for the first time in over a decade, Purdue will wrestle Indiana in Mackey Arena. Mackey Mayhem will get underway at 8 p.m. ET.
"So many great things have lined up for Mackey Mayhem: we'll be wrestling our in-state rival, it'll be Friday the 13th and we'll also be having our Alumni Night," Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. "When we told the team we were having Mackey Mayhem, their eyes just lit up. They're excited to take the action into Mackey Arena. That's going to create a lasting memory and that's something special for the team, but also the alumni that come back."
Mackey Mayhem marks just the third dual in Mackey Arena since the early 1990s for the Boilermaker grapplers, the last occurrence coming in 2004.
"When I saw the environment volleyball had with their Pack Mackey match my first year at Purdue, I got really excited," Ersland said. "It sparked the idea very early on that this was something I wanted to do with wrestling. We have worked hard to create a tremendous environment. We want to expand our fan base and expose our sport to the casual fan, especially here are Purdue."
Friday's dual marks the 103rd meeting between the in-state rivals since first meeting on Feb. 24, 1914. Although Indiana leads the series 62-37-3, the Boilermakers have won the last six meetings, which is their longest winning streak in the series. They have also won four straight home duals over their in-state rivals.
The Big Ten Conference showdown also has Governor's Cup implications on the line. The winner of the dual will receive one point and break the current 2.5-2.5.
The Boilermakers are coming off of a 20-16 win at Northwestern on Sunday. A technical fall by Alex Griffin and a Jacob Morrissey pin were key as both teams claimed victory at five weights. Morrissey's 50-second stick of Braxton Cody was his second pin in as many dual matches and it was also the second pin of his career that has come in less than 60 seconds.
A high school dual between Washington (Ill.) and Hoopeston (Ill.) will take place prior to the Purdue vs. Indiana dual, starting at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.
