WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Black Team scored the final seven runs of the game to overcome a big deficit, rallying to salvage an 8-8 tie in the opener of Purdue baseball's Old Gold & Black Series on Thursday at Alexander Field.
The Gold Team led 8-1 after a five-run fourth inning. But the Black Team came right back with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame. Johnny Carr's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth pulled the Black Team even.
Originally slated to be a seven-inning game, it was called after six innings due to practice time limitations.
Skyler Hunter singled in each of his first three at-bats for the Black Team. He had a chance to give his team the lead with Carr on second and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Nick Wojtysiak struck him out to preserve the tie.
Hayden Grant and Jack Coney both had an RBI double during the Gold Team's five-run fourth inning. John LeGare delivered a two-out, two-run double with the bases loaded in the bottom of the frame after an error helped extend the inning.
Cameron Williams retired five of the six batters he faced over two innings of scoreless relief for the Black Team. Pitchers for the Black Team retired eight consecutive batters after the Gold Team had six consecutive hitters reach base safely to ignite the five-run rally in the fourth inning.
Evan Kennedy drove in the first two runs for the Black Team with an RBI single in the second inning and sacrifice fly in the fourth. Mike Madej delivered the early big hit for the Gold Team, singling home a pair of runs with the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning. Milo Beam was safe at home on a double steal moments later.
Black Team starter Hunter Wolfe opened the game strong, retiring eight of the first 10 batters he faced. But consecutive two-out walks extended the third inning and helped the Gold Team take the 3-1 lead.
The Black Team loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning against reliever Kyle Schweiger. Alec Olund and Nick Dalesandro delivered consecutive sacrifice flies, but Schweiger was able to prevent the tying run from scoring. Olund and Dalesandro both had three productive plate appearances.
Freshman catcher Bryce Bonner erased Hunter from the base paths twice, picking him off in the first inning and throwing out his classmate trying to steal in the third.
Game two of the series is set for Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
