USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships / Crusader Indoor Invitational Results
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- It was a match that went down to a tiebreaker in the third set, but in the end Eduardo Mena of Tennessee Tech denied Purdue's Ricky Medinilla in the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships at the Goodfriend Tennis Center on Sunday.
The two players exchanged 6-4 sets, Mena taking the first and Medinilla the second, setting the stage for the decisive third. A tightly contested third set ensued and it was the Buccaneer that prevailed in the end, taking the set 7-6 (5). The loss ended Medinilla's run at the tournament with a mark of 5-1.
On the other half of the draw, it was Indiana's Sam Monette beating Alex Gornet of Louisivlle 6-2, 7-6 (9). Monette will face Mena in Monday's final.
Action also wrapped up Sunday for the trio of Boilermakers that were competing at the Crusader Indoor Invitational in Valparaiso, Indiana. In four singles matches, Purdue was only able to come away with a walkover. Dominik Sochurek picked up his second straight-set victory Saturday, while in doubles Matt Bouggy and Renan Hanayama posted a 6-2 win over Ross Smith and Zane Schmudlach of Western Illinois.
The Boilermakers will be back in action Friday at the Schwartz Tennis Center when they open their second home tournament of the fall season with the Black & Gold Invitational.
