INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - The Purdue women's golf team finished third at the 2015 Big Ten Championships, shooting eight-over, 872, at The Fort Golf Course over the weekend. The Boilermakers shot six-over, 294, on Sunday, led by freshmen Marta Martin and Linn Andersson, who carded matching scores of one-over, 73.
Martin tied for fifth individually, shooting one-over, 217, on the weekend, and was the No.2 placing freshman in the tournament behind individual medalist Sarah Cho of Northwestern. Martin made four birdies on Sunday, and 11 for the tournament, leading the Boilermakers at a tournament for the third time this season. She was one-over at the turn on Sunday, and after a double-bogey to start the second half of the course she heated up, making birdie on holes 11 and 12, and another on 17 to finish up.
Andersson was fairly steady through the final round, making par on 13 holes and adding birdies on No. 7 and No. 10. Her score on Sunday was her best 18 holes of her rookie season with the Boilermakers, while her 54-hole mark of 10-over, 226, was a career-best as well.
The Boilermakers' other two team scores on Sunday came from sophomore August Kim and junior Anna Appert Lund, who shot matching rounds of two-over, 74. Kim was one-under after the first nine holes, making birdie on No. 3 and No. 6, but struggled on the back-nine with five bogeys. The highlight of the day came on the par-five, 16th hole as Kim hit a brilliant second shot and dropped in a 10-foot putt for eagle. Appert Lund played very steady, sinking 14 pars and a birdie on No. 13.
Despite not logging a team score on Sunday seniors Aurora Kan and Johanna Tillström had outstanding individual finishes for the tournament, tying for ninth and 13th, respectively. Kan shot three-over, 75, on Sunday, finishing two-over, 218, while Tillström was scored a three-over, 75, on Sunday to finish four-over, 220, over the weekend.
Cho led Northwestern to a share of its second Big Ten Championship, tying Ohio State at one-under, 863, which set a new 54-hole team record for the event. The Buckeyes share their 13th team title in conference history, with its four scorers all finishing in the top-five, individually.
The Boilermakers await word of a probable trip to the NCAA Regionals. Selections will be announced Monday night, live on The Golf Channel at 7 p.m. (ET).
