INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - The Purdue women's golf team opened up the first day of the Big Ten Championships tied for fourth place at the The Fort Golf Course on Friday, shooting five-over, 293. Freshman Marta Martin did the heavy lifting for the Boilermakers, shooting three-under, 69, and sits tied for second place after the first day of competition.
The Boilermakers were red hot early, making 11 birdies on the front nine and holding the team lead as low as seven-under par. Martin and sophomore August Kim played the front side at three-under, while senior Aurora Kan was one-under and junior Anna Appert Lund was at even-par. Both Martin and Kan were bogey-free for the first nine holes.
The back-nine would not prove as friendly to the Boilermakers as they were only able to make four birdies and dropped from the top spot in the team standings. Martin continued her solid play, shooting even-par down the stretch, joined by senior teammate Johanna Tillström, who kept her score at two-over, 74, to record a team score for the Boilermakers.
Martin is one of four players tied for second at three-under, while Ohio State's Jan Chanpalangsri owns the individual lead at four-under, 68. Kan is the next Boilermaker on the board, tied for 17th, while Tillström is tied for 23rd. Ohio State owns the team lead at seven-under, 281, while Northwestern is in second at four-under, 284.
