WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team concluded the BNP Paribas Collegiate Challenge presented by Oracle with losses to No. 28 Cal and No. 75 UC Irvine at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Boilermakers slipped to 4-10, 0-2 B1G playing three matches in as many days while in Indian Wells, California.
Despite falling 5-0 to Cal on Saturday, Purdue's top doubles team of Diego Acosta and Ricky Medinilla knocked off the 31st-ranked pair of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton, 6-2. It was the Boilermaker tandem's first win over a ranked opponent this season and their sixth side-by-side this spring.
Only singles were contested in Sunday's 4-2 loss to UC Irvine. Purdue put two points on the board with victories from Medinilla and Renan Hanayama. Medinilla posted a straight set win over Tyler Pham at the No. 2 slot, 6-3, 6-4, as the sophomore notched his sixth win of the season. At No. 5, Hanayama disposed of Jonathan Hammel, 6-3, 6-4.
B1G dual matches take over Purdue's schedule moving forward. The Boilermakers will travel to Minnesota on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by a 1 p.m. match at Wisconsin on Sunday.
