INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - No. 1 Oklahoma showed it was too much for the Purdue men's tennis team in a 4-0 loss in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Collegiate Challenge presented by Oracle Friday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
As the Sooners (15-1) advance to the second round of the winner's bracket, the Boilermakers (4-8, 0-2 B1G) slip into the consolation side. They will take on No. 28 California (9-5), who fell in Friday's second match to No. 29 Columbia, 4-1. Action between the Purdue and the Bears is set to get underway Saturday at 11:30 a.m. ET.
With wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, Oklahoma claimed the doubles point. Purdue's doubles pair of Arthur Dobradin and Renan Hanayama first fell to the No. 69 tandem of Alex Ghilea and Andrew Harris, 6-0. Next at the No. 1 spot, the fifth-ranked Sooner duo of Dane Webb and Axel Alvarez dealt Ricky Medinilla and Diego Acosta a 6-3 setback. Straight-set singles victories at Nos. 6, 3 and 5 clinched the dual for the Sooners.
