WACO, Texas - Fifth-ranked Baylor proved to be too much for the 55th-ranked Purdue men's tennis team in a 7-0 loss outdoors Friday at the Hurd Tennis Center. The shutout dropped the Boilermakers' record to 2-6, 0-1 B1G, while the Bears moved to 7-2.
Baylor captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. No. 19 Tony Lupieri and Felipe Rios defeated Purdue's Diego Acosta and Arthur Dobradin in the top spot, followed by a 6-4 match from Mate Zsiga and Diego Galeano over Mateus Silva and Ricky Medinilla.
Straight-set victories were registered by the Bears in five of the six singles matches. At No. 3, Silva took the second set from Galeano and required a 10-point tiebreaker, but was unable to close out the match, falling 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (3).
No. 122 Medinilla forced a tiebreaker in the opening set, only to have No. 67 Max Tchoutakian take it, 7-6 (2). Tchoutakian used a 6-2 second set to secure the win at No. 2.
The Old Gold & Black will host a doubleheader with non-conference foes Morehead State (10 a.m.) and Dayton (4 p.m.) in their return to the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center on Feb. 28.
