RIO GRANDE, P.R. - The Purdue women's golf team shot the lowest round of any team in the tournament on Tuesday to finish fifth at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by the Boilermakers at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course. Led by a scorching final round from senior Aurora Kan, the Boilermakers finished just two-over par, 290 for the day and wrapped up the tournament at 26-over par, 890.
After struggling over the first two days of competition Kan found her groove on Tuesday, firing a bogey-free round with a trio of birdies to finish three-under, 69, marking the second-lowest round of any player on the day. Her score was aptly supported by a one-over, 73 from sophomore August Kim and matching scores of two-over, 74 from junior Anna Appert Lund and freshman Marta Martin. The Boilermakers' team score for the day matched the sixth-best final round in tournament history, tying marks from Alabama in 2008 and 2010.
Kim was the Boilermakers' top individual finisher, tying for sixth place overall at one-over, 217 for the tournament. Appert Lund and Martin tied for 22nd place at seven-over, 223, while Kan's impressive finish bumped her to 33rd at 11-over, 227.
The University of Arkansas defended its team title, shooting three-over, 291 on Tuesday to finish 12-over, 876 for the tournament. The number is the eighth-best team score in tournament history, and marks the third straight year the winning team has posted a top-10 score in the record book. Iowa State's Chonlada Chayanun captured medalist honors for the tournament, tying the second-best score in tournament history at seven-under, 209 (66-69-74). She bested the field by five strokes as Northwestern's Hannah Kim was second at two-under, 214, but turned in the top mark of the final day at four-under, 68, alongside North Carolina State's Lindsay McGetrick. Kim and McGetrick matched the top final round in tournament history, creating a six-way tie for the mark, while Kan is now one of six players in tournament history to turn in a 69 on the final day.
The Boilermakers return to action on March 2, heading to Coral Gables, Fla., for the Miami Hurricane Invitational at the Biltmore Golf Course.
