Individual rankings // InterMat (1/13)
A CLOSER LOOK AT PURDUE'S PROBABLE LINEUP
- For the first time since March 3, 2014, the Boilermakers sport a trio of grapplers ranked by InterMat in No. 20 Danny Sabatello, No. 20 Doug Welch and No. 15 Braden Atwood. Last season Cashé Quiroga (133), Sabatello (141) and Atwood (197) were ranked together in the lineup for three weeks (2/17-3/3).
- Sabatello and D. Welch each carry 10-1 dual record. Sabatello leads the team in dual points scored with 40 and has claimed victory in 20 of his last 25 dual matches spanning the past two seasons. D. Welch, who has tallied 30 dual points for the Boilermakers, has been victorious in his last six dual matches and is off to a 2-0 start in the B1G.
- Brandon Nelsen will be making his 50th career start for the Old Gold & Black on Sunday at Penn State. Patrick Kissel's next dual appearance will be his 40th.
- Through 11 duals, Purdue has scored 235 points with seven different lineups. Changes in the lineup have been made at 125, 149, 174, 184 and 197.
- The same lineup has been used in both B1G duals. That group is 6-14 and has given up four bonus point matches (3 MD, 1 TF).
- Purdue's wrestlers have combined for a dual record of 64-46. Through nine duals, the Boilermakers have posted 45 decisions, 10 falls, five major decisions, three technical falls and have received one forfeit. Of the 46 losses, 35 are by decision, nine are by major decision, one by technical fall and they have been pinned once.
- Coach Ersland's squad is 3-0 at home, 2-2 on the road and 2-2 at neutral sites. They are 2-4 against ranked teams.
NOTABLE REMATCHES
- Purdue's Braden Atwood owns a 4-1 record over Northwestern's Alex Polizzi. He has won three straight over the Wildcat, highlighted by a 4:32 pin in wrestleback action of the 2014 NCAA Championships.
- At Midlands, Danny Sabatello rallied back after falling behind 5-0 in the first period to Dominick Malone of Northwestern to push the match into sudden victory, but a takedown by the Wildcat with nine seconds left sealed the win, 9-7.
RANKINGS NOTES
- After upsetting then-No. 20 Chattanooga and a victory over North Carolina, Purdue pushed into the top 25 of the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll released on Dec. 19 at No. 25. It was the Boilermakers' only appearance in the poll as they dropped out in the Dec. 22 edition. They have been receiving votes in six of the other nine polls released this season. This week they have eight points.
- Braden Atwood has been ranked by InterMat for 50 consecutive weeks dating back to Oct. 28, 2012. The redshirt senior is listed at No. 15 on InterMat's 197-pound list.
- Following a 2-0 weekend that included an upset of then-No. 2 James Green of Nebraska, 157-pounder Doug Welch has earned his first career national ranking from InterMat, debuting at No. 20. He also appeared on three other outlets for the first time in his career, cracking into WIN Magazine at No. 18, Amateur Wrestling News at No. 19 and ASICS Flowrestling at No. 20.
- Like his twin, Chad Welch's upset of Wisconsin's then-No. 18 Frank Cousins at 174 propelled him into the ASICS Flowrestling ranks for the first time in his career. He checks in at No. 20.
- Danny Sabatello returns on the 133-pound list for InterMat at No. 20 after falling out of the Jan. 6 rankings. It is the fourth week this season he's owned an InterMat ranking.
- Eleven weeks of rankings have been issued and 10 Boilermakers have appeared at least once in one of the five polls. There have been three weeks in which a pair of grapplers, Atwood and Sabatello, were included on all five.
- Purdue wrestlers have gone up against 58 ranked opponents and won 11 times. D. Welch's 5-4 (TB1) upset of James Green stands as the highest ranked opponent that a Boilermaker has beaten this season. C. Welch leads the team in wins over ranked foes with four, followed by Sabatello with three. Ten of the 11 wins were by an unranked Purdue grappler and one was in a head-to-head match between then-No. 19 Sabatello and then-No. 14 Nick Soto of Chattanooga.
- When ranked by InterMat, Purdue wrestlers have lost six times. Of those six losses, four have been at the hands of an unranked opponent, one was an upset to a lower-ranked opponent and the other was to a higher-ranked opponent.
- Polls monitored, a complete list of recognized Boilermakers and their movement the past two weeks can be found in the dual notes.
