Senior Whitney Bays led the Boilermakers with 13 points and six rebounds on Friday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's basketball team opened the Basketball Travelers International (BTI) Invitational on Friday, topping UC Irvine, 69-44, in Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers push their record above .500 with the victory, improving to 5-4 on the year with their second straight win.

UC Irvine had one of its hottest halves of the season to start the day, hitting 13-of-29 first half shots (.448) to head to the locker room down just four points, 31-27. The Boilermakers led almost the whole way, but couldn't pull away from the Anteaters and went to the locker room with a slight advantage.

The second half looked to pick up where UC Irvine left off as they took a 32-31 lead with a 5-0 spurt, but that's when the Boilermaker defense took hold of the game. The Boilermakers went on a 21-2 run over the next eight minutes, locking down the Anteater offense and making eight of their first 10 shots for the half.

Senior Whitney Bays let all scorers with 13 points and had a game-high six rebounds to lead the way for Purdue. Joining her in double-figures were classmate Liza Clemons (12), junior April Wilson (11) and sophomore Ashley Morrissette (10). Wilson dished out five assists, while she and Morrissette each had a trio of steals. Clemons tied a career-high with three blocks, and junior Torrie Thornton finished with six points and five rebounds.

Sophomore Irene Chavez led the Anteaters with 10 points and three assists as UC Irvine fell to 1-10 on the season, while freshman Tierra Hicks added eight points and five rebounds off the bench.

In the second game of the day Wright State outlasted Denver, 72-63, on the strength of 25 points and nine assists by senior Tay'ler Mingo. After trailing by 10 at the break, 37-27, Denver rallied to pull within one in the second half, but the Raiders pulled away late and improved to 7-2 with the win.

The Boilermakers return to action tomorrow at 2:30 p.m., facing Denver (2-9) in the second day of the BTI Invitational. Action starts at noon as UC Irvine battles Wright State.
