ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Purdue women's golf team got off to a tough start at the East & West Match Play Challenge, hosted by the University of Michigan at Radrick Farms Golf Course on Saturday, finishing seventh in stroke play at 35-over par (308-303=611). Senior Aurora Kan had the Boilermakers' best individual effort with a two-round score of eight-over par (75-76=151), as Purdue will open match play against sixth-seeded Iowa tomorrow in the consolation bracket.
Kan had the Boilermakers' top score in the opening round, scoring three birdies on her way to a three-over, 75, followed closely by sophomore August Kim, who bounced back from a tough opening weekend to shoot four-over, 76. Junior Anna Appert Lund and freshman Linn Andersson accounted for the Boilermakers' other two team scores at six-over, 78 and seven-over, 79, respectively.
In the day's second round Kan, Kim and Andersson all carded scores of 76, but freshman Marta Martin rebounded strong to post the low-round of three-over, 75. Martin posted a trio of birdies to get on the team scorecard and help the Boilermakers edge out Michigan for the No. 7 spot in the team race.
Action starts tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. as No. 5 Linn Andersson squares off against Iowa's Amy Ihm. The winner of tomorrow's match will face the winner of No. 5 seed Miami and No. 8 seed Michigan on Monday for the consolation title.
