WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's golf team struggled in the opening round of the Knights and Pirates Invitational in Melbourne, Fla., carding a 305 in the morning round for 12th place. But the Boilermakers improved by 10 strokes in the afternoon and moved up six spots on the leaderboard by shooting a 295, for a two round total of 600.

Central Florida and East Carolina are serving as co-hosts for the Knights and Pirates Invitational at the par-72 Classic Course at the Suntree Country Club, which is playing 6,145 yards for the 54-hole tournament. Texas Tech is leading the event with one round to play with a total score of 581 (287-294, +5). The Red Raiders' Deborah DeVilla is the individual leader with a five-under par 139 (69-70).

Central Florida is in second place at 585 (293-292), Wisconsin (289-302=591) is third, Chattanooga (298-298=596) fourth and Michigan (298-299=597) is fifth.

Paula Reto led Purdue on Monday and is tied for fifth place with a one-over par 145. She opened with an even-par 72 and shot a 73 for the second 18-holes. Laura Gonzalez-Escallon carded the low round of the day for the Boilermakers with a two-under par 70 in the second round. The La Hulpe, Belgium, native fired a 79 to open play however and is tied for 14th at 149.

Freshman Aurora Kan set a personal best with a 74 in the morning wave and is tied for 25th after shooting a 77 in the afternoon for a total of 151. Classmate Vicky Scherer is tied for 52nd with a two-round total of 156. The Augsburg, Germany, native started play with an 81, but recorded one of Purdue's four counting rounds in the afternoon with a 75. Junior Kishi Sinha is tied for 64 with a 158 (80-78).

Freshman Kendall Dusenberry is competing as an individual and is 87th with a two-round total of 190 (96-94).

Play resumes Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The Boilermakers will be paired with Chattanooga and Michigan in the final round. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com and the final recap will be posted to purduesports.com.
