RIO GRANDE, P.R. - The 32nd-ranked Purdue women's golf team got off to a rough start in the spring season, tied for 12th after shooting a 310 in the opening round of the 10th annual Lady Puerto Rico Classic, an event the Boilermakers host at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, P.R.
Sixth-ranked LSU and No. 11 Georgia are tied for first after recording 294s (+6) on Sunday. No. 28 Texas Tech, where former Purdue assistant coach JoJo Robertson is the head coach, is in third after firing a 296 (+8). No. 45 Arkansas is one shot back at 297 (+9) in fourth place, while No. 8 Oklahoma State is fifth with a team total of 300 (+12).
Georgia's Emilie Burger shot a six-under par 66, tying the tournament record for a first round score, and holds a five-stroke lead after one round. Four players recorded one-under par 71s and are tied for second: Mercedes Germino (Kent State), Austin Ernst (LSU), Emily Tubert (Arkansas) and Kelsey Vines (Oklahoma State).
The Rio Mar River Course provided a challenge for the field, with only seven golfers finishing the day at even par or better. The Greg Norman designed course has been set up as a par-72, 6,191-yard venue for the tournament.
Purdue juniors Laura Gonzalez-Escallon and Kishi Sinha turned in the low scores of the day for the Boilermakers with opening round 75s. The pair are tied for 19th with 11 others. Junior Paula Reto shot a 77 and is tied for 37th, while freshmen Aurora Kan carded an 83 to tie for 77th and Kendall Dusenberry turned in a 91 and sits in 83rd.
Freshman Vicky Scherer played as an individual and is tied for 67th after carding an 81.
