DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The first round of the NCAA East Regional in Daytona Beach, Fla., wrapped up at the LPGA International's Legends course with No. 2 seed Purdue sitting in a fifth place tie with Arizona State after firing a 295 (+7). Coastal Carolina is in the lead after posting a 286 (-2) and the top seed in the region, Alabama, is in second with a 287 (-1).
Laura Gonzalez-Escallon led the Boilermakers and sits in a tie for 11th after shooting an even-par 72 on Thursday. The sophomore from La Hulpe, Belgium, is tied with seven other individuals including the fourth-ranked player nationally, Brooke Pancake of Alabama. Gonzalez-Escallon is just three shots back of leaders Jessica Alexander of Coastal Carolina and Jessica Negron of Florida State who each finished with a 69 (-3).
Big Ten medalist Numa Gulyanamitta and Maude-Aimee LeBlanc tied for Purdue's second best score after firing a two over-par 74, placing the seniors in a tie for 32nd. Thea Hoffmeister finished her opening round with a plus-three 75, good for a 39th-place tie, and sophomore Paula Reto is tied for 85th with a 78 (+6).
Birdies were tough to come by for Purdue as it made just seven as a team on Thursday. Gonzalez-Escallon had three scores under-par on the day as the sophomore bounced back from two bogeys in the first six holes to make four threes in a five hole stretch from hole No. 9 to No. 13.
LeBlanc got off to a nice start as she was one under through three before bogeying three holes before the turn to card a 38 on the front side. The senior played the next eight holes one under-par before bogeying the final hole en route to an even-par 36 on the back nine.
The Boilermakers will continue in the East Regional on Friday. The first tee time for Purdue is at 1:26 p.m. ET. NCAA Regional play consists of three 18-hole rounds. After the three-day tournament concludes, the eight teams with the best scores and top three individuals whose teams do not qualify will advance to the NCAA Championships from May 18 to 21 at the Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas.
