WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Freshman Adam Schenk shot the second-lowest round of the tournament to claim the individual title and the Purdue men's golf team shot four under as a team on Sunday to win the Boilermaker Invitational at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
With two players in red numbers and one at even par, the Boilermakers shot 284 (-4) on the day to finish the tournament at 877 (+13), a dozen strokes ahead of second-place Idaho. Purdue outdueled the Vandals by nine strokes on Sunday after entering the day with a three-shot lead.
Schenk fired a final-round 69 (-3), matching the second-best round of his collegiate career, on Sunday to earn a two-shot victory over Ben Engle of IUPUI. He finished the tournament with a total of 213 (-3), posting a red number in each of the last two rounds.
The effort was Schenk's second victory of the season, as he won the Purdue/Midwest Shootout at the BBGC during the fall season. Combined with junior William Sjaichudin's three wins in Purdue's last three outings, a Boilermaker has now won the individual medal in each of the Boilermakers' last four competitions.
Senior Erich Johnston shot his second-best round of the season, a two-under 70, on Sunday to move into a tie for eighth place with a total of 221 (+5). The performance marked his second top-10 finish of the season. Freshman Sam Fu carded an even-par 72, also his second-best round of the campaign, in the final round to earn a share of 11th (222, +6), while Sjaichudin shot 73 (+1) on Sunday to tie for 16th with a total of 226 (+10). Senior Nakarintra Ratanakul finished in a tie for 18th place with a total of 227 (+11) after shooting 76 (+4) on Sunday.
Leading a group of five Purdue golfers playing as individuals, sophomore Henry Plager turned in an even-par 72 on Sunday to finish in sole possession of fourth place with a total of 218 (+2). He capped the weekend with back-to-back rounds at even par.
Junior Tyler Duncan finished in a tie for 25th with a total of 231 (+15), freshman Edward Peters tallied a 233 (+17) to tie for 32nd, junior Scott Busch tied for 36th with a total of 234 (+18) and senior David Gersztein finished in a tie for 44th with a score of 237 (+21).
Purdue will once again take to the Kampen Course next weekend when it hosts Big Ten Championships at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. There is no admission fee for the event. Live results for the tournament will be available at golfstat.com.
