WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The fifth-ranked Purdue women's golf team is tied for second place after the opening round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R. The Boilermakers recorded a team total of 300 on Sunday and trail top-ranked Alabama (286) by 14 strokes. No. 25 Iowa State is tied with the Boilermakers in second, while No. 30 TCU is tied with Florida State for fourth place after opening with a 303.
The Crimson Tide has three golfers in the top five on the leaderboard after day one of the tournament. Alabama's Camilla Lennarth leads the field after carding a two-under par 70 and is one of just four golfers who shot below par in the first round. Texas Tech's Gabriella Dominguez, Alabama's Jennifer Kirby and Florida State's Maria Salinas all fired 71s on Sunday and are tied for second, one shot off the lead. Brooke Pancake from Alabama is tied for fifth.
Playing in the first tournament of the spring season, the defending national champions were led by sophomore Paula Reto who fired a one-over par 73 in the first round. Reto is tied for seventh. Junior Numa Gulyanamitta, who is the highest individually ranked Boilermaker at No. 24, carded a 75 on Sunday and is tied for 16th place. Laura Gonzalez-Escallon and Thea Hoffmeister each recorded 76s on Sunday and are tied for 25th place while freshman Alex Stewart fired a 78 and is tied for 42nd.
Former Purdue assistant coach JoJo Robertson is in her second year as the head coach at Texas Tech and has her Red Raiders in 11th place after recording a first-round score of 310.
The Boilermakers are hosting the Lady Puerto Rico Classic for the ninth-straight year and this season the event is being held at the River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort from Feb. 13 to 15. Alabama won last year's tournament with a team total of 872. The River Course is a Greg Norman design that is set up to play 6,191-yards for the event and par is 72. Play will resume with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, with the final round to be played beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
