WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's and women's track and field teams suffered tough defeats to archrival Indiana University on Saturday inside Lambert Fieldhouse as the women fell 89-47, while the men lost 77-59. Despite the losses, the Boilermakers showed vast improvement from last year's dual with the Hoosiers.
The Boilermakers were able to win six events on the women's side and five on the men's side. The women turned in a 1-2 performance in the long jump as Leah Eber won the event with a mark of 5.89 meters (19-04.00) followed by Nikki Nunn at 5.64 (18-06.00). Eber was also part of Purdue's 1-2 finish in the triple jump, leaping a distance of 11.17 meters (36-07.75). Ivanna Vukoanovic took the top spot with a mark of 11.67 (38-03.50).Emily Breslin picked up five points in the women's high jump topping the field after posting a mark of 1.75 meters (5-08.75). Cianna Tabb paced the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.71 while Kari Shoolbraid won the 600 meter run with a time of 1:35.44. The women's 4x400 relay team also turned in an excellent performance as the team of Janan Graham, NaTasha Blair, Ebony Woodard, and Shoolbraid posted a time of 3:49.43 to win the race by nearly three seconds.
On the men's side, the Boilermakers were able to notch a 1-2 finish in the long jump and the pole vault. Chris Kirtz and Seth Virgil bested the long jump competition with marks of 7.20 meters (23-07.50) and 7.15 (23-05.50) respectively. Chris Thoman and Zach Saunders took the top two spots in the pole vault, each clearing 5.00 meters (16-04.75).
Senior Bill Hardcastle topped the men's shot put, tossing 17.95 meters (58-10.75). Jacob Palmer took the top spot in the 600 meter run for the Boilermakers with a time of 1:20.59. Purdue also turned in an impressive first place finish in the men's 4x800 meter relay. The team of Mitch Keyser, Dan Porter, Ladd Mercer, and Palmer turned in a time of 7:37.57 to win by just .02 seconds.
The Boilermakers continue scored competition next Saturday as they host the 16th annual Gene Edmonds Cup. The meet is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., at Lambert Fieldhouse.
