WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The first round of the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ind., went according to the script, at least as far as the first three seeds are concerned. Top-seed and No. 2-ranked Arizona State is in the lead after firing a 297 (+9), No. 2 seed Southern California is in second with a team score of 299 (+11) and seventh-ranked and No. 3 seed Purdue is in third place, just six strokes off the lead after opening with a 303 (+15).

Boilermaker Thea Hoffmeister was feeling confident coming into the tournament and she translated that confidence into a two-under par 70 on Thursday. The junior from Berlin, Germany, is tied for first with Oregon's Kendra Little. Juliana Murcia from Arizona State was the only other player to record a below-par score on the first day of action and is in third with a 71.

Windy conditions on the hilly course made for a challenging environment at Otter Creek Golf Course which is set up as a par-72, 6,416-yard venue for the tournament.

Junior Numa Gulyanamitta recorded Purdue's second-best score with a 77, placing her in a tie for 27th. Big Ten medalist Laura Gonzalez-Escallon and junior Maude-Aimee LeBlanc are tied for 39th after opening with 78s and freshman Paula Reto is tied for 59th after firing an 80 on Thursday.

Purdue got off to a rough start as Gonzalez-Escallon, Gulyanamitta and Reto double-bogeyed the first hole, but Hoffmeister birdied hole No. 1, one of five birdies on the day for the junior. She tied Gonzalez-Escallon for the most birdies in round one for Purdue.

The Boilermakers will tee of beginning at 1:25 p.m. ET on Friday. NCAA Regional action is composed of three rounds of 18 holes. At the conclusion of the three-day, 54-hole tournament, the top eight teams and the top three individuals whose teams do not qualify from each of the three regional tournaments will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 18 to 21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
