WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The eighth-ranked and two-time defending Big Ten champion women's golf team holds a 15-stroke advantage after two rounds of the 2010 Big Ten Championships at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis. No. 13 Michigan State is in second place (296-290=586, +10) and No. 19 Ohio State is one-stroke behind in third (294-293=587, +11).
The Boilermakers opened with a one-over par 289 on Friday and shot a six-under par 282 in the afternoon for a two-round total of 571 (-5). Purdue shot the second lowest 36-hole team round for women's collegiate championship play at the Ridge and the 282 in the second round was the third-best team 18-hole round.
Five of Purdue's six golfers currently sit in the top 13 as individuals. Michigan's Ashley Bauer is in first place after setting a Big Ten and tying the University Ridge 18-hole record with a 65 in the second round. She had seven birdies enroute to her first day total of seven-under-par 139.
Purdue's top-ranked individual, eighth-ranked Maude-Aimee LeBlanc is tied with Michigan State's Laura Kueny for second place. LeBlanc went 72-68 on Friday for a four-under par 140 after two rounds. The Sherbrooke, Quebec, native's second round 68 was the lowest round of the day for the Boilermakers.
Freshman Laura Gonzalez-Escallon is in fourth place after following up her first round 71 with a 70 in the afternoon round, for a total of 141 (-3).
Classmate Paula Reto is tied for sixth (74-71=145), junior Thea Hoffmeister is just one stroke behind and tied for eighth (72-74=146), while junior Numa Gulyanamitta is tied for 13th after carding a 74-73-147. Sophomore Kishi Sinha is tied for 46th after opening with an 80 but improving to a 76 in round two.
The third round of the 72-hole tournament is scheduled to begin Saturday morning with tee times beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
The Boilermakers will get round three under way on hole No. 1 beginning at 10:54 a.m. on Saturday.
