WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 25 Purdue women's soccer team was in attack mode tonight, taking out Eastern Illinois 5-1 at the Varsity Soccer Complex. Five different Boilermakers scored as the team registered 39 shots, the highest single match tally in program history.
The Boilermakers did not waste any time, scoring 10:40 into the match. Freshman Kellie Phillips put the ball in off a rebound for her first career goal, also the team's first of the season.
Eastern Illinois' first serious threat came at the 33:35 mark with a shot on goal by Sarah Rusk. Junior Jenny Bradfisch easily made the stop, her lone save of the night. The first half ended with Purdue leading 1-0.
Coming out of halftime, the Boilermakers came out guns blazing. At 54:30, freshman Alexis Tryba scored on an assist from Phillips. Just 50 seconds later, senior Felicia Schroeder put one into the back of the net off a pass from junior Loredana Riverso.
At 58:24, Riverso got into the act with her first goal of the season, this one coming off an assist from sophomore Liz Secue. Riverso dribbled by Panther goalkeeper Jenny Williams in front of the net and punched it into the lower right corner.
Easern Illinois showed signs of life at 63:50 on a goal scored by Ashley Eck. The header made the score 4-1, but the Boilermakers squashed any hope of a comeback minutes later.
Purdue finished the scoring barrage at 80:49, as sophomore Katie Becker hit a header of her own on a beautiful cross by Schroeder. Each of tonight's goal scorers tallied their first goal of the season.
For the night, the Boilermakers registered 17 shots on goal and had 10 corner kicks. Three Purdue players ended the night with three points. All in all, it was a solid night to be a Boilermaker.
"I have a feeling Oregon will play a little more like Kansas did, but I'm very happy to get the win tonight. We played well and have some momentum going into next weekend," coach Rob Klatte said.
Purdue hits the road again this weekend for a Sunday matinee at Oregon. The match starts at 4 p.m. Eastern time and live stats will be provided on purduesports.com.
