WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Winning the doubles point guaranteed nothing for the Purdue men's tennis team, which fell 4-3 at Iowa in its second-to-last match of the regular season Saturday. The Boilermakers dropped to 3-15 overall and 0-9 in the Big Ten with the defeat, while the Hawkeyes improved to 10-10 and 2-7.
Purdue jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The senior pair of Sounak Chatterjee and Filip Koziell downed Kyle Markham and Brett Taylor 8-5 in the top spot. Senior David Robinson and junior Paul Rose teamed up for a 9-8 win over Chaitu Malempati and Aaron Schaecterle in the second position.
Iowa responded in singles, winning three straight at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 before Purdue had another chance to light up the scoreboard. Finally, at No. 2, Robinson delivered a 7-6, 6-3 victory against Markham.
Purdue needed to win the last two matches on the court to win the team match, but Iowa spoiled the effort. Malempati posted the match-clinching victory at No. 1 over Rose. Purdue sophomore Scott Warner added a win at No. 6 after the match was decided.
Purdue will close out the regular season Sunday at No. 53 Minnesota, beginning at noon.
