Wrestling Posts Another Road Win

Feb. 8, 2004

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Purdue wrestling continued its trend of winning in its opponent's arena, defeating Michigan State in East Lansing by a score of 19-13 in front of a crowd of 714 at Jenison Field House. The Boilermakers are 6-0 this season when wrestling before the opposing crowd.

With the win, the Boilermakers improve to 17-5 overall, establishing a school record for wins in a season. The prior record of 16 wins was set in 1996-97 and equalled in 1997-98. Purdue evens its Big Ten record at 3-3. Michigan State is now 1-10 overall and 0-5 in conference action.

"It's good to get the win," head coach Jessie Reyes said, "but we need to wrestle with more emotion and a greater sense of urgency. Our guys did enough to get the team victory, but we seemed a little flat. With just two duals remaining before Big Tens, there needs to be more emotion on the mat."

The dual opened at 157 with senior Brad Harper (Mishawaka, Ind.) earning the first win of the contest for the Boilermakers with a 4-2 win over Arsen Aleksanyan. Harper battled past a 1-0 deficit through two periods with a takedown in the final minute to ice the victory.

Matt McCarty gave Michigan State a 4-3 team lead with a major decision at 165 pounds over freshman Bryce Markley (St. Paris, Ohio), 11-2.Purdue returned to the team lead with a 10-6 decision by senior Ryan Lange (Northfield, Ohio) over Anton Hall. Lange overcame three back points by Hall in the third period to post a match-winning takedown and three-point nearfall in the final 34-seconds to gain the win. The victory is Lange's 122nd of his career, just five shy of tying the Purdue record held by current assistant coach Scott Hinkel (127, 1984-87).

At 184 pounds, sophomore Ben Wissel (Richmond, Ind.) scored a first period takedown against Nate Mesyn and used a 1:11 riding time advantage to post the 4-3 decision. The win was the second straight 4-3 win by Wissel over Mesyn, the first coming in the 2003 Big Ten Championships which earned Wissel a berth in the NCAA Championships.

Freshman Nathan Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored a takedown with just 0:18 remaining in the match to defeat Jeff Clemens at 197 pounds, 5-3. Moore secured the win with a point for riding time, having rode Clemens for the entire second period.

Senior heavyweight Israel Blevins (Sullivan, Ind.) used a third period takedown and a pair of two-point nearfalls to defeat Mike Keenan 7-2. The win was the fifth in six Big Ten duals for the Boilermaker senior.

Michigan State got a win at 125 pounds with a 7-6 decision by Craig Trombley over freshman Sean Schmaltz (Franklin, Ind.) on a takedown in the final 20-seconds.

Junior 133-pounder Rene Hernandez (Hammond, Ind.) scored bonus points for the Boilermakers with a 9-1 major decision against Tony Greathouse. Hernandez broke open a close match with a reversal and two back points in the second period to build a 6-0 advantage en route to the win.

Michigan State claimed the final two matches of the afternoon, winning 5-1 at 141 pounds and 11-6 at 149 to close out the dual.

The wrestling point in the Titan Series will be decided next Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. in Mackey Arena as the Purdue grapplers play host to intrastate rival Indiana. The IU dual is Senior Day for the Boilermakers, honoring the six seniors on the 2003-04 squad.
