CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Purdue grapplers completed the 2003-04 regular season with a 23-9 loss at No. 5 Illinois on Sunday in front of a crowd of 1,397 at Huff Hall in Champaign.
The Boilermakers, ranked 18th in the nation, finished the season with an 18-6 record, 404 in the Big Ten Conference. The Fighting Illini improved to 13-1 and 7-1.
"It was a frustrating afternoon because I thought we matched up well with Illinois," head coach Jessie Reyes said. "We lost a few close matches that I thought we could have won. We just didn't wrestle as well as we could have at some weights, and it's hard to win on the road in the Big Ten if you don't perform to the best of your ability."
The dual opened at 149 pounds with a pin by Anton Dietzen against senior Dan Jankowski (Evansville, Ind.) at 0:58 of the match. At 157 pounds, senior Brad Harper (Mishawaka, Ind.) was defeated by top-ranked Alex Tirapelle, 8-2. Tirapelle scored two takedown and had one nearfall, although all were controversial points due to contested control. Illinois' team lead grew to 12-0 with an 11-6 decision by Ben Hay over freshman Bryce Markley (St. Paris, Ohio).
Purdue got on the scoreboard at 174 pounds with a sudden victory decision by senior Ryan Lange (Northfield, Ohio) over Pete Freidl, 6-4. Lange scored the first offensive points with a second period takedown, but Freidl even the score in the final minute with a takedown of his own. In the extra stanza, Lange scored 37 seconds into the one-minute period for the win, his 29th of the season and 123rd of his career. Lange needs four more wins to tie assistant coach Scott Hinkel for the all-time Purdue record.
The dual's second overtime match followed at 184 pounds as Brian Glynn scored the extra-period win over sophomore Ben Wissel (Richmond, Ind.), 3-1. Purdue climbed closer in the team score with wins in the next two matches.
Freshman Nathan Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.) shutout Jason Potter 5-0 in a rematch from a match from the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. In Las Vegas, Moore pushed then-No. 5 Potter to the end, coming up short in a 3-2 decision. In Champaign, Moore didn't leave the result to come down to the end, riding Potter for the full second period and scoring a third period takedown to secure teh victory.
At heavyweight, senior Israel Blevins (Sullivan, Ind.) rebounded from a disappointing loss against Indiana to defeat Mike Behnke, 5-3. Blevins did not allow an offensive point and scored two takedowns, one in the second period and one in the third, to post the win and improve his season record to 25-5.
With the team score 15-9 in favor of Illinois, the Illini posted back-to-back major decisions at 125 and 133 pounds before closing the match with a win at 141 for the final of 26-9.
The Purdue wrestling team will next compete in the 2004 Big Ten Wrestling Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The championships will be held in St. John Arena on the campus of Ohio State University on March 6-7.
