No.21 Wrestling Sinks Navy, Skins Tigers

Jan. 3, 2004

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Purdue wrestling team posted wins in six of ten weight classes to best the US Naval Academy in the opening session of the Lone Star Duals, 24-14. The Boilermakers followed that performance with a dominating 42-0 blanking of Princeton.

Purdue got extra-point wins in four of their six victories against Navy, including a fall by freshman 133-pounder Chase Beebe (Downers Grove, Ill.), the sixth pin of the season for the first-year collegian. Beebe's pin was at 0:53 of the match.

The Boilermakers also had extra-scoring wins at 141, 174 and 184 pounds.

Sophomore 141-pounder Doug Withstandley (Jackson, N.J.), ranked 27th in the nation, recorded a 10-2 major decision over No.25 Nate Gulosh. With takedowns in the first and second periods, the Purdue grappler took a 4-2 advantage into the final two minutes. Starting in the down position, Withstandley recorded a reversal and scored three back points to put the match out of reach.

Senior Ryan Lange (Northfield, Ohio), the nation's No.3 174-pounder, used a seven-takedown onslaught to defeat Andrew Hemminger by 18-6 major decision. Lange posted two takedowns in the final 0:25 of the first period to build a 7-2 advantage enroute to the win.

At 184 pounds, No.10 Ben Wissel (Richmond, Ind.) blanked Travis Manion by 12-0 major decision. The Purdue sophomore dominated the match with a first period takedown and three-point nearfall and built up nearly five minutes of riding time by the end of the seven-minute contest.

Also recording wins for Purdue against the Midshipmen were senior Brad Harper and senior Israel Blevins.

Harper (Mishawaka, Ind.), ranked 26th at 157 pounds, posted a 10-7 win over Michael Carbonaro. Blevins (Sullivan, Ind.), the No.11 heavyweight, scored a 10-3 decision over Tanner Garrett.

After sitting out the next session, Purdue returned to the mat for Session Three at noon and wasted little time in gaining the advantage on Princeton. Sweeping the ten matches in the dual, the Boilermakers won seven by major decision, technical fall or fall.

Pins in contrasting styles at 174 pounds by Lange and at 197 by freshman Nathan Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.) highlighted the win for the Boilermakers.

Lange's fall came at the 1:59 mark of the first period against Tim Prugar after the Purdue senior had built a 13-3 lead with four quick takedowns. In traditional Lange style, the Boilermaker grapper scored on takedowns and let Prugar score the escape before immediately jumping on the attack for anther takedown. On his fourth takedown, Lange planted Prugar on his back and the match was over.

At 197, Moore scored his fall 11-seconds quicker than Lange, sticking Matt Hawrilenko at the 1:48 mark. Unlike Lange's showing of multiple first-period takedowns, Moore used just a single takedown, scoring the points just 21 seconds into the match. After wrenching the Tiger grappler for three back points, Moore turned Hawrilenko once more for the fall.

After the dual opened with back-to-back decisions at 125 and 133 pounds by freshman Sean Schmaltz (Franklin, Ind.) and Beebe, Purdue unleashed an impressive run of high-scoring matches.

Withstandley scored with two three-point nearfalls in a 12-0 major decision over Milo Adams. The Purdue sophomore posted a takedown 18 seconds into the match and built an 8-0 advantage before the end of the opening stanza.

Senior Dan Jankowski (Evansville, Ind.) rebounded from a disappointing outing against Navy with a 12-4 major decision over Princeton's Ryan Foss. Three takedowns in the first period built a lead for Jankowski, the No.26 149-pounder in the nation, that he would not relinquish.

Harper blanked Charlie Wiggins at 157 pounds with a 15-0 technical fall. Leading just 2-0 after one period, the Purdue senior scored with two reversals and three nearfalls to give him the lopsided victory and extend Purdue's lead in the dual to 19-0.

After a 7-4 decision by senior Mark Groski (Cobleskill, N.Y.) over Matt DeNichilo moved the Purdue lead to 22-0 and set the stage for four punishing performances by the final wrestlers in the Boilermaker lineup.

Lange's fall moved the match to Wissel's 184-pound match against Allen Sista, a 16-5 major decision with for the Purdue sophomore. In an amazing flurry of takedowns, Wissel extended his 4-1 lead after two periods into the 11-point victory. In the final 1:03 of the match, Wissel scored with five takedowns.

Blevins followed in the path of Wissel with a dominating final period in a 13-4 major decision over No.27 Joe Looke. Blevins overcame an early Looke takedown to build to a 5-3 lead after two tightly-contested periods. The final stanza was a different story, as the Purdue senior scored eight points, highlighted by two takedowns, to gain the win and end the dual.

With the pair of wins, Purdue improves to 7-0 on the season. With the seven victories to open the campaign, the 2003-04 Boilermakers have enjoyed the best start since Purdue opened the 1996-97 season 10-0. The 7-0 start is the second-best start in program history, behind only that 10-0 opening.

The Boilermakers will face Cal State-Fullerton and Brown at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively, on Saturday in the final two sessions of the Lone Star Duals.
