EVANSTON, Ill. - The Purdue wrestling team, ranked No.17 in the nation, opened the Big Ten dual season with a too-close-for-comfort 20-19 win over Northwestern on Friday evening in Evanston, Ill.
The Boilmermakers' victory was the eighth consecutive over Northwestern and improved Purdue's season record to 15-2, 1-0 in Big Ten action. The Wildcats dropped to 8-3 overall and 0-2 in conference duals.
The teams split the matches with each school winning five weight classes. However, bonus point wins at 141, 174 and heavyweight gave the Boilermakers the one-point advantage in the dual. Sophomore Doug Withstandley (141) scored with a pin over Paul Augle, and seniors Ryan Lange (174) and Israel Blevins (Hwt.) posted major decision victories. Rounding out the Boilermaker wins were decisions by senior Dan Jankowski (149) and sophomore Ben Wissel (184).
Purdue returns to the mat on Sunday, Jan. 25, when the Boilermakers take on No.10 Iowa at 2 p.m. in Mishawaka, Ind., at Mishawaka High School's East Gym. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $5 (adult) and $3 (student).
