No.17 Wrestling Blanks Eastern Illinois

Jan. 18, 2004

CHARLESTON, Ill. - In the final dual before the start of the Big Ten season, No.17 Purdue dominated the mat against Eastern Illinois, tallying a 37-0 win over the Panthers at Lantz Arena in Charleston, Ill.

The win for the Boilermakers improved the team's dual record to 14-2. Eastern Illinois dropped to 4-7.

"I was pleased with the attitude and the effort of our wrestlers today," head coach Jessie Reyes said. "With just five days left before our conference opener, we needed a good showing from some weights. I saw what I needed to see today, so now we can hit the practice room this week with a good idea of what needs to be done to be successful against Northwestern and Iowa."

The dual opened at 184 pounds with Purdue sophomore Ben Wissel (Richmond, Ind.) scoring a 21-6 four-point technical fall over Adam Sesso. Carrying a 9-3 advantage into the third period, Wissel scored with five takedowns to build the 15-point win. The victory was Wissel's 22nd of the year, equalling the total from his NCAA-qualifying freshman season in 2002-03.

In a close match at 197 pounds, junior Bryan Kapp (Fort Wayne, Ind.) recorded a takedown with 0:13 remaining in the final stanza and posted three back points to gain the 8-2 decision and advance Purdue's team lead to 7-0.

At heavyweight, No.14 Israel Blevins (Sr., Sullivan, Ind.) bested No.25 Peter Ziminski in a tight match by a 6-5 decision. Trailing 2-1 after one period, Blevins scored with takedowns in the second and third stanzas to gain the win.

Freshman 125-pounder Sean Schmaltz (Franklin, Ind.) earned team bonus points with a 15-5 major decision against Kevin McNicholas. Leading 2-0 after three minutes, Schmaltz used an eight-point second period to put the match out of reach and giving Purdue a 14-0 lead in the team score.

The 133-pound match saw the return of junior Rene Hernandez (Hammond, Ind.) to the Boilermaker lineup. In a match against No.23 Pat Dowty, Hernandez posted a comeback win, overcoming a 5-2 deficit in the third period with a reversal and a three-point nearfall to claim a 7-5 decision.

Sophomore Doug Withstandley (Jackson, N.J.) needed 6:06 to stick Bob Fangerow to extend the Boilermaker advantage to 23-0. The Purdue 141-pounder led 9-2 in the third period after recording a reversal before turning Fangerow and getting the pin.

149-pound senior Paul Sacquitne (Fremont, Ind.) three takedowns and two reversals to defeat Chris Jordan by 13-4 major decision. Sacquitne used a takedown and nearfall in the first period to build a 5-0 advantage, a lead that would not be relinquished in giving Purdue a 27-0 team lead.

Senior Brad Harper (Mishawaka, Ind.) gave the Boilermakers their second consecutive major decision, a 10-2 win over Adam Beeler at 157 pounds. Four takedowns, including one at the 0:10 mark of the opening period, propelled Harper to the victory.

At 165 pounds, freshman John DeCeault (Tinley Park, Ill.) blanked Clay French in a 4-0 decision. A first period takedown gave DeCeault all the scoring he would need for the win, adding a third period escape and a riding time point in the match.

Purdue ended the dominance in the dual with a 9-4 decision by freshman Bryce Markley (St. Paris, Ohio) over Andy Mangiaguerra at 174 pounds. Markley opened the match with a takedown eight seconds into the first period and never trailed.

Purdue takes to the road to start the Big Ten portion of its season on Friday, Jan. 23, in Evanston, Ill., against Northwestern. The Boilermakers will face No.10 Iowa in Mishawaka, Ind., on Sunday. The Iowa dual will be held at Mishawaka High School.
