No.21 Purdue Sticks Indianapolis Grapplers

Dec. 21, 2003

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No.21 Purdue wrestling team used the pin to defeat the Indianapolis Greyhounds in West Lafayette, 39-9. The win improved the Boilermakers to 5-0 in duals this season, while Indianapolis is 0-1.

"I think we wrestled well today," head coach Jessie Reyes said. "We had some impressive outings, and I think this is a good win before Christmas break. Our guys will have a few days off before coming back to train for the Lone Star Duals."

The dual started quickly for the Boilermakers, with freshman 125-pounder Sean Schmaltz (Franklin, Ind.) posting a 9-4 win. Schmaltz recorded four takedowns in the match, two in the first period, to defeat Craft, ranked No.7 in Divison II, for the second time this season. Schmaltz improved his invidual record to 8-6 with the win.

Purdue received its first two pins of the afternoon at 133 and 141, as freshman Chase Beebe (Downers Grove, Ill.) and sophomore Doug Withstandley (Jackson, N.J.) stuck their opponents.

Beebe recorded a takedown 26 seconds against Mike Smith and turned the Greyhound for a fall at 1:08. The pin was Beebe's fifth of the season, a total that ranks fourth in the nation among 133-pounders. The victory was Beebe's 10th of the season, moving his record to 10-6.

Withstandley followed with a first period pin of his own, sticking Matt Krulik at the 1:26 mark. The Boilermaker 141-pounder needed just 10 seconds to record the takedown that led to the pin. Withstandley is now 11-2 on the season.

At 149 pounds, Dan Jankowski (Evansville, Ind.) posted a 16-6 major decision over Wes Hall. The Purdue senior recorded his first of season-high seven takedowns in the match 27-seconds into the first period as ws never challenged after that point. Jankowski improved to 9-4 for the year.

Senior Brad Harper (Mishawaka, Ind.) won the closest match of the afternoon with a 4-2 decision over Josh Holden. Harper, now 9-4, recorded a takedown in the first period and used a third period escape and riding time point to secure the win.

Indianapolis got on the scoreboard at 165 pounds as Derek Donelson, ranked No.4 in Division II, defeated freshman John DeCeault (Tinley Park, Ill.) by a 4-1 decision. Deceault's escape to start the second period was the first point of the match, but Donelson knotted the score with a penalty point as the Boilermaker was called for stalling. A third period takedown iced the win for the UIndy wrestler, dropping DeCeault's season record to 7-4.

Senior 174-pounder Ryan Lange (Northfield, Ohio) remained perfect on the year with a 20-2 technical fall over Zach Goldsberry. Lange, 14-0 and ranked No.3 in the nation, started slowly, recording his first points with a takedown at the 2:12 mark in the first period. However, two nearfalls in the period built the lead to 7-0 and Lange used an impressive 13-point second period, including a riding time point, to put the match away.

Lange now has 109 career wins, just 18 behind Purdue career leader and current assistant coach Scott Hinkel, who registered 127 wins from 1984-1987.

Pins at 184 and 197 pounds blew Purdue's lead up to 36 points at 39-3.

Sophomore Ben Wissel (Richmond, Ind.), ranked No.10 in the nation, took Adam Kent to the mat and pinned him at 2:21 of the first period. Wissel posted a takedown just 11-seconds into the match and had three back points added to his score before getting Kent's shoulders to the mat. With the win, Wissel is now 12-3 this year.

Nathan Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.) posted Purdue's fastest pin of the match and of the season, falling Dave Zupofska in 30-seconds. A takedown at the 0:10 mark led to Moore's fourth pin of the season, upping his record to 8-2.

At heavyweight, injury kept Purdue from sending a wrestler to the mat, giving the six points to Evan Love and Indianapolis, closing the team score at 39-9 in favor of the Boilermakers.

"Overall, we are a young team," Reyes said, "so going into the semester break 5-0 with two good tournament showings, I am pleased. We have four freshmen and two sophomores out on the mat, but they have been wrestling like upperclassmen. I think that's a credit to the way the older guys have shown what Purdue wrestling is all about."

The Boilermakers will be off for Christmas until Dec. 27, when they return to West Lafayette to prepare for the Jan. 2 Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas. Purdue will wrestle four duals that day, facing Navy, Princeton, Cal State-Fullerton and Brown.
