Steve Callaway


Steve Callaway comes to Purdue from a 15-year coaching career in south Florida. As the boys' cross country and the boys' and girls track coach at Miami Gulliver Preparatory, his teams won 12 district and three state championships in the past nine years. He was twice selected Florida coach of the year in his classification.

Before coaching at Gulliver, Callaway taught and coached at Palmer School in Miami. His athletes won five individual state titles and two of his relay teams broke state records.

An Indianapolis native, Callaway was the Marion County champion in the high jump, long jump and pole vault while attending North Central High School. As a collegian, he set the Indiana University school record in the pole vault and qualified for the NCAA Championships. He was a member of five Big Ten Championship teams, with a best individual finish of second in the vault.

Following his track and field career, which also included numerous decathlon competitions, Callaway took up windsurfing and was a finalist in the 1984 Olympic Trials. In 1985, he won a world championship in that sport.

Callaway is USATF certified as a Level II coach of jumping events and a Level III candidate in throws. He has a wife, Karen, who has twice been selected Florida coach of the year in cross country.
