WEST LAFAYETTE - Purdue Football will hit the country roads for West Virginia as part of next season’s schedule, with a notable nonconference contest against the Mountaineers in Morgantown slated for early in the 2027 proceedings. The game will be the first meeting between the two programs since 1996, with both schools owning a road win over the other, all-time.
The addition of the West Virginia matchup will place a pause on Purdue’s longstanding series against Notre Dame. Due to schedule movement involving multiple schools, an exact date will be unveiled at a later time.
“With the expected expansion of the College Football Playoff to 24 teams, there will be scheduling parameters for schools to follow, including having 10 regular season games against power conference opponents,” said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tommy McClelland. “Getting Coach Odom’s program into matchups that best serve our goals and ambitions has been a focus of mine since arriving in West Lafayette, and we are excited to add this game with West Virginia. The tradition-rich rivalry of Purdue and Notre Dame, a matchup that has been played on and off 90 times in program history, will be reevaluated for potential addition to future schedules.”
Purdue last faced West Virginia during the 1996 season, dropping a 20-6 result to the visitors (Sept. 21, 1996). The Boilermakers, led by former head coach Jim Colletto, struck first in 1995 with a road win over then-No. 23-ranked Mountaineers by a score of 26-24 (Sept. 2, 1995). Purdue legend Mike Alstott rushed for 109 yards in the victory.
Additionally, Purdue has finalized 2027 game dates with UAlbany on Aug. 28, 2027, and Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 11, 2027. The contest against the Great Danes (FCS) will be the first-ever for Purdue, while the Boilermakers lead the all-time series against the RedHawks, 9-3-1. Purdue last played Miami in 2006, winning in overtime, 38-31, at Ross-Ade (Sept. 9, 2006).
