Echeverria Lozano Named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Football kicker Jacobo Echeverria Lozano has been named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Oct. 5). The freshman converted a trio of field goals to help the Boilermakers knock off Illinois 24-17 on the road and win the Cannon Trophy.

Echeverria Lozano split the uprights on kicks of 30, 34 and 33 yards. It was his third game with three field goals, one game short of Mitchell Fineran for the most by a Purdue kicker over the last 25 years.

The Pittsburgh, Pa., native is 11-of-12 on the year (91.7%) with a long of 47 yards. He leads the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally in field goals per game at 2.2. He sits third in the league in scoring at 9.6 points per game and fourth in field goal percentage.

With 11 made kicks, he has already climbed up to second in Purdue freshman history, behind Travis Dorsch’s record of 16 from 1998. His 11 makes through the opening five games are the fourth most by any freshman kicker over the last 25 years.

Echeverria Lozano and the Boilermakers return to Ross-Ade Stadium to open a two-game homestand Saturday night against Minnesota with an 8 p.m. kickoff on BTN.
