CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Thanks to a gritty performance on both sides of the ball, the Purdue football team earned a hard-fought 24-17 win at rival Illinois Saturday afternoon in Gies Memorial Stadium.

The Boilermakers (2-3, 1-1 B1G) brought home the Cannon Trophy, improving to 41-32-2 in the trophy series and securing their eighth win in the past 11 matchups against the Fighting Illini (2-3, 0-2 B1G).

Purdue amassed 345 yards to match the exact output of Illinois’ offense, but critical plays late in the game made the difference. The Boilermakers converted all four trips to the red zone, while holding the Illini to a mark of 2-of-4 inside the 20.

At the site of his first career start from two years ago, quarterback Ryan Browne was once again surgical leading the Purdue offense, completing 18-of-27 passes (66.7%) for 255 yards, a touchdown and a passer rating of 158.2. He helped Purdue get off to a fast start after a pair of Jacobo Echeverria Lozano field goals when he connected with Tra’Mar Harris for a 21-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, giving the Old Gold & Black a 13-0 lead.

Asaad Waseem caught three passes for a team-high 98 yards. Chauncey Magwood added four catches for 54 yards, including a 31-yard reception to set Purdue up at the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter as the Boilermakers led 16-10 with under five minutes to go. Antonio Harris scored from the wildcat formation to extend Purdue’s lead, and Browne rushed up the middle for two points to give the Boilers a 24-10 advantage.

The Boilermaker defense had its best performance of the season, making key stops on third and fourth downs in crunch time. Purdue held the Illini to a 2-of-6 mark on third down after halftime and forced a crucial fourth-down stop at the Purdue 17-yard line in the fourth quarter.

Charles Correa, Jojo Hayden and Don Saunders tied for the team lead with six tackles apiece. Correa and Keyshawn Burgos combined for the only sack by either team, a 9-yard loss in the fourth quarter to push Illinois out of field goal range on 3rd-and-11.

Following Antonio Harris’ touchdown run, defensive back John Slaughter intercepted Illinois quarterback Katin Houser on the next drive at the Purdue 8-yard line to keep Illinois off the board. After an Illini touchdown cut the lead to 24-17, the Boilers recovered an onside kick and sealed the victory.

Purdue prevailed in front of a hostile, sellout crowd of 60,670, improving to 1-1 in Big Ten Conference play.
