WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Track & Field legends Devynne Charlton and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi took victories in the 100mH and shot put, respectively, at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Charlton, representing the Bahamas, ran 12.33w to come out on top of a 100mH field that featured Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Megan Simmonds of Jamaica in second and word record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria in third. Charlton qualified for the finals after she ran 12.39w to win her prelims heat.
The victory is Charlton’s first win outdoors in 2026 after top three placements at the Bahamas Championships, Diamond League competitions and the Prefontaine Classic. Her last victory was on March 22 at the World Indoor Championships in the 60mH when she ran 7.65 to equal her own world record.
Charlton’s 12.33, at +2.5 m/s wind, ranks third in the world in 2026 in all conditions. Her top wind-legal time of 12.37 on May 23 is also third in the wind-legal rankings.
Enekwechi, representing Nigeria, threw 21.07m to win the competition by just 0.04m over Great Britain’s Tom Welsh. He is the first Nigerian to win the Commonwealth Games in the shot put. Enekwechi previously took fourth in 2022 and silver in 2018.
The victory is his sixth of the outdoor season and his previous wins were headlined by his fifth Nigerian title on June 21.
Enekwechi is ninth in the world this year with his 21.74m that earned him runner-up at the Drake Relays on April 24.
Strong competitions from Charlton and Enekwechi continues the pair’s journey towards the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
