WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Another wave of premier long course racing is on tap this week as Purdue will be represented by student-athletes at USA Swimming’s Toyota National Championships and the Central American and Caribbean Games.
Dylan Burau, Jonny Hines and Alex Hotta have made the trip to the West Coast for USA Swimming’s annual summer showcase, which is again being contested outdoors in Irvine, Calif. Rising sophomore Matt Rose is also going to California next week to compete at USA Swimming’s Speedo Junior National Championships, also held at Irvine’s William Wollett Jr. Aquatics Center.
Nathanial Thomas earned the right to compete for his native Jamaica at the centennial edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games, which are being held in the capital city of the Dominican Republic for the first time since 1974. The Central American and Caribbean Games are generally a quadrennial showcase.
Both Toyota National Championships and swimming events at the Central American and Caribbean Games are set for July 28-Aug. 1.

Jānis Dzirkalis is also preparing to represent his native Latvia at the European Aquatics Championships, with swimming events set for Aug. 10-16 in Paris.
Hotta, Thomas and Dzirkalis helped Purdue set a team record and posted an NCAA Championships qualifying time in the 200-yard medley relay at the Big Ten Championships in February. That same week, Burau joined forces with Hotta, Thomas and Dzirkalis on the 200-yard freestyle relay and that quartet’s time was also good for an event berth at NCAAs.
Thomas has recently competed for country at the World Aquatics Short Course Championships in December 2024 and Junior Pan American Games in August 2025. Dzirkalis represented Latvia at the World Aquatics Championships and Baltic State Championships in 2025 before enrolling at Purdue in August 2025.
Burau, Hines, Hotta and Rose all competed at the at the TYR Pro Swim Series Indianapolis and Indiana Senior Long Course Championships (Senior State) earlier this summer, among other various meets. Burau swept the backstroke events at Senior State and is headed back to Irvine after previously competing at USA Swimming’s Speedo Summer Championships in July 2024. Many Boilermakers opted to remain in the Midwest and compete at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in Madison at the end of July last summer, including Burau, Hotta and Rose. Hines is moving up to senior nationals this year after posting three top-eight finishes at the Speedo Junior Nationals following his senior year of high school last summer.
